and what Michael Jackson, Joe Paterno and elevators have to do with it…
It wasn’t normal for me to be lifted in the line-out But that was the play that was called. As I came down I was hit hard and knew right away that something was wrong with my ankle. I tried to get up and run but as I did I felt a stabbing pain. I’m not sure what felt worse…the pain of a twisted ankle or the pain of knowing I couldn’t continue playing.
I didn’t like coming out of the rugby match. But that’s just the way it was. Bad ankle…can’t play. The next day I went to the doctor and he started me on regular ultrasound treatments and sent me to the physical therapist. To heal this injury I had to continue getting ultrasound treatments and meeting with the physical therapist for weeks. Finally, one day, after multiple trips to the doc, I was completely healed. Back to the playing field!
Many people have asked me recently, “How many ERT sessions does it take to find emotional balance?” The answer is, “It depends.”
It depends on the severity of the emotional injury. It is no different than a physical body injury.
Just as old football injuries leave a mark so do old emotional injuries. The only difference is emotional injuries cannot be seen by the naked eye and are doing much more damage to our body than we realize.
The truth is your emotional body holds onto past experiences like a well-organized filing cabinet.
All fear-based files are in one folder while self-esteem and power issues go in another. Don’t forget about all of the good and bad relationship experiences you’ve had…those go in another file and so on and so on. When something happens in your life related to one of those files, it triggers open that particular file bringing up the fear or issues around it and causing you to deal with it the same way you always have in the past. This is called a stress pattern.
HEADS UP! These files are DRIVING all that you do including your habits, rituals, routines, food choices, relationship ups and downs and pretty much anything else you can think of. You have allowed them to become who you are. They are exactly what stress and stress patterning are.
Here is an example.
Scary Elevator
Let’s say when you were a teenager you had a scary incident happen in an elevator. When almost to the top of a tall building the elevator got stuck. As if contemplating how much space is below you and the bottom of the elevator shaft wasn’t bad enough a man with blond hair and dark rimmed glasses started freaking out and the next thing you knew people were screaming. Within minutes the elevator started moving again and then you were off the elevator and all was good.
This experience created an emotional injury in your body and if it wasn’t tended to the following injury byproducts may have occurred in your life.
- Afraid of heights
- Afraid of elevators
- Afraid of closed in spaces
- Instant anxiety when someone yells or screams
- Weird mannerisms whenever you see someone with blond hair and dark rimmed glasses
Just like I had to go to physical therapy to deal with my bad ankle it may take multiple Energy Restoration Therapy appointments to clear out emotional trauma.
And don’t forget, these emotional traumas sit in our “cellular memory” and fester not only affecting our habits and daily decision making but having their impact on the physical body as well. Most of us have figured out that a deep emotional wound that is never cared for can cause physical body problems too.
Joe Paterno, Michael Jackson and Rheumatoid Arthritis
Think about it. Do you think that it was random that Joe Paterno died of a heart attack shortly after the “heart breaking” scandal at Penn State surfaced a few years ago? And you don’t have to research too far into Michael Jackson’s life to make a list of heart breaking events that may have caused his early death.
Anyone out there have a family member who is full of anger and frustration due to past issues in their life? How many of these angry people have “hot” inflammatory imbalances in their body like arthritis, inflammatory bowel issues or hyperacidity? Are you starting to connect the dots?
Don’t let emotional baggage rule your life causing unhealthy habits, fear and physical body problems.
